Changing the WaterWays -Changing the Lives

Water Crisis at the Tribal Terrain of hilly village have multiple negative consequence right from food security to health and well-being.

The Baiga tribes of Ghoghra- Bhurbhuspani have demonstrated their skills and  art of implementation of the Boulder  Check Dam construction at the KAUA NAL  at the fringe of the village  Bhurbhuspani  by Bhagatu Ram, Hansuram, Sunder Singh Dal Singh, the Baiga  lead by Sonu Ram Baiga one of the Project Field Assistant of IBRAD  working for Conservation Based Livelihood for the tribe. Check dam placed in the small channel which not only interrupts the flow of water and flattens the gradient of the channel but makes the flow of velocity of the water slower. Such a check dam has helped to distribute flows across a swale to store water and make a path toward a well planned agriculture field for irrigation.A well-planned construction of a check dam through community participation right from the beginning can be cost-effective and can bring pride to the community for the success of their collective efforts. The participation becomes easy if the purpose is focused and there is transparency right from the beginning. Before taking up the project meetings were held with the villagers. and a resolution was signed by the stakeholders. Loose boulders were arranged in two rows at the check dam which acts a small barrier and prevents water from overflowing. The dam helped to reduce the effective slope of the channel of Bhurbhuspai village and allowed sediment to settle there itself. The tribes are planning to use the water stored for fishery and irrigation for agriculture for five tribal families of  Kuwaria bai, Bhagbati, Sukhbanti, Sundar Singh and Dalsingh. Bhagbati was very excited to see the plan of water reaching her barren land. She plans to cultivate Potato.

They also mentioned that the groundwater recharge will be there  during the wet season  and then they can get water  in the dry season when demand is highest for water.
